The challenge: collecting comparable data from hundreds of farms

Andriani Società Benefit and B Corp is one of the most innovative companies in the Italian food industry. It produces pasta, baked goods, pet food, and protein ingredients— base , naturally gluten-free grains, and legumes —sourced from an agricultural supply chain that includes farms in Puglia, Basilicata, and other Italian regions.

For Andriani, sustainability is not just a commitment to be declared. It must be backed by reliable data collected throughout the entire value chain: from the practices adopted in the field to the processing and marketing of the product.

At the start of the project, the 130 farms that made up the original scope of the legume supply chain did not use a shared system to record field activities.

As a result, the data was fragmented and difficult to compare. It was not possible to conduct a structured analysis of environmental performance across companies, crops, and seasons, nor to establish a common baseline against which to measure improvements.

Without reliable data base , it became difficult:

  • assess the impact of agronomic practices;
  • compare farms, crops, and rural areas;
  • identify the areas with the greatest potential for improvement;
  • communicate verifiable results to retailers, investors, and certification bodies.

The initial goal was to gradually digitize the supply chain by 2028, eventually involving up to 200 farms covering approximately 7,000 hectares. However, the project’s growth quickly exceeded expectations: by 2025, more than 350 farms were already participating.

The data collected would also serve as the “ base ” for developing a validated protocol for regenerative agriculture applied to the Italian legume supply chain.

The solution: an integrated project to digitize and monitor the supply chain

The partnership between Andriani and xFarm Technologies began in October 2022 with the development of Andriani Farm, a digital platform tailored to the needs of the supply chain.

The project is not limited to the introduction of software. The goal is to build a shared system through which farmers, storage operators, and supply chain managers can collect, organize, and interpret agricultural data.

The team at xFarm Technologies supports farmers and grain storage operators through in-person training sessions, field visits, and regular monitoring meetings. Each farm thus begins to record the activities carried out throughout the season: from soil preparation to planting, from fertilization to pest control, all the way through to harvest.

The data is consolidated into a centralized system that allows supply chain managers to monitor:

  • cultivated land;
  • agronomic activities;
  • collected works;
  • carbon footprint;
  • net water use;
  • acidification;
  • eutrophication.

Thanks to xFarm andAnalytics, Andriani can shift from an overview of the entire supply chain to a detailed view of individual farms, comparing performance, crops, growing seasons, and regions.

From Field Data to Regenerative Agriculture

In 2023, the project will enter a new phase.

One hundred hectares in Puglia are serving as a test site for one of Italy’s first major regenerative agriculture initiatives focused on a legume supply chain.

The practices that have been introduced and are being monitored include:

  • direct seeding;
  • cover crop;
  • minimal processing;
  • crop rotations;
  • crop rotation;
  • use of circular organic soil amendments.

Each practice is tracked digitally, field by field, to analyze its implementation and evaluate its effects over time.

Thanks to Marsilea’s on-site consulting and the technical support provided by dss+, which helped formalize the results in a structured report, the data collected are being used to develop a protocol that can be replicated across the entire supply chain.

Once the transition plan has been defined in collaboration with the farmers, the project also includes a forecasting component. The model available on the platform now makes it possible to estimate the carbon sequestration potential for each farm.

Digitization thus becomes a tool not only for reporting, but also for planning and supporting agronomic decision-making.

The results: more than 350 companies and a baseline for three crops

At the end of the 2025 season, the Andriani digital supply chain includes:

  • more than 350 farms;
  • 3,200 hectares digitized;
  • 18 stacker trucks;
  • 4,300 metric tons of traceable products (chickpeas, peas, lentils, rice);
  • 631 fields imported in 2025;
  • More than 2,950 agricultural businesses registered in 2025.

Three days of training for farmers and monthly monitoring meetings have helped improve the quality, completeness, and consistency of the data collected.

The most significant result isthe 2025 Sustainability Analysis, which made it possible to establish an environmental baseline for the supply chain of chickpeas, peas, lentils, and rice.

The analysis was conducted using a sustainability calculation engine certified by RINA in accordance with ISO 14040, transforming the data collected in the field into structured, comparable, and communicable information.

Carbon Footprint per Crop

In the case of peas, organic farms have an average carbon footprint of 0.28 tCO₂eq per metric ton, compared with 0.42 tCO₂eq per metric ton for conventional farms.

The gap is driven primarily by yield: 1.21 metric tons per hectare for organic farming compared to 0.86 for conventional farming. When emissions per hectare remain similar, higher productivity reduces the impact attributed to each metric ton harvested.

Why Yield Is Key to the Sustainability of the Supply Chain

The analysis revealed a common principle across the various crops: yield is one of the main factors contributing to variability in impact per unit of product.

Given the same farming practices and emissions per hectare, higher productivity allows the environmental impact to be spread over a larger volume of product, thereby reducing the emissions associated with each metric ton harvested.

This information can guide agronomic decisions, crop variety selection, technical support for farms, and the identification of areas with the greatest potential for improvement.

Sustainability data is therefore not merely a reporting tool. It serves as a concrete source of “ base ” to make more targeted decisions and guide farms on their path to improvement.

Toward 2028: An Increasingly Measurable Supply Chain

The transformation of the Andriani supply chain continues.

The goal for 2028 is to further increase the number of farms and hectares included in the digital system, expanding data collection and analysis to cover an ever-larger portion of the supply chain.

The sustainability calculation model is also being updated in accordance with the GHG Protocol and the ISCC+ standard, with the aim of further strengthening the reliability and recognition of the data in international markets.
